Wildlife Rehabilitation & Release
Please note that at present due to bird flu regulations and being unable to separate the work with wild owls and other birds of prey from the work with our own collection our owl hospital is closed. We have just launched a major fundraiser to enable us to hopefully reopen our hospital in Spring 2025.
The Sanctuary moved to its current location on the Goss Moor in October 1994, with 22 aviaries and 37 owl occupants. The new owl hospital opened on Saturday 9th November 2002 and this space has helped over the years when treating the ever growing number of sick and injured wild owls and other birds of prey.
We work with local vets, the RSPCA and Devon & Cornwall Police, all of whom call on us for help if there are sick or injured owls within our area.
Since the hospital opened in the Sanctuary has treated over 800 wild owls and other birds of prey. Unfortunately due to bird flu regulations it has not been open since the start of 2022.
If you would like to support us in our work to reopen the hospital you can donate via our Just Giving Pagehttps://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/owlhospitalreopening?utm_term=8YzJmgKMa
Weasels
Let us introduce you to Kine & Kia our breeding pair of weasels.
Weasels are part of the mustelid family.
In 2024 Kia & Kine had 5 babies that we transferred to the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield.
White Stork Conservation Project
We are pleased to be collaborating with The Cornwall Stork Project and The Cornwall Nature Conservancy to work toward the reintroduction of White Storks into Cornwall.
White Storks have been absent from the UK for 600 years. In the last few years other rewilding projects have begun the process of reintroducing White Storks to the UK. We are currently caring for several young storks that have been born in Cornwall. The hope is that once they are released, following their migration, they will come back to Cornwall to bred and we will see these magnificent birds flying over the Cornish countryside.
The project was featured on the BBC local news and more can be read about that here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c80k543ezrpo
Polecat Breeding Program
Here at the Sanctuary we are pleased to be a part of the conservation work for polecats. We have a breeding pair, Frejya & Loki.
Freyja & Loki were born in May 2023 in the wild, where they were orphaned and subsequently cared for by a rescue centre in Surrey. They have come to the Sanctuary on loan from Polecat Stud Book keeper. They are part of the UK breeding program and any young they have will be released, under licence, back into the wild.
Early in May 2025 they had at least 8 babies who are all doing well.
